Form I-9 Update

May 2013

Previous Version of Form I-9 Expires May 7th, 2013

As an important notice to employers, please note that May 7th is the last day it is permissible to use the previous version of the Form I-9 for Employment Authorization Verification. Please confirm that the new I-9 form is being used going forward, and employers can be fined for using outdated forms.

All employers are required to have completed I-9 forms for all employees. The new form is only necessary for newly-hired employees.

The new form can be found on the USCIS website: http://www.uscis.gov/I-9Central

For more information about the new Form I-9 format and procedure, please also see our previous post, or contact us at info@farkaslawgroup.com.

More Changes to Come as Senate Debates Immigration Reform

The new immigration reform legislation currently before the Senate contains provisions that would profoundly affect the Employment Verification process. If the reform act is passed, not only will companies be required to complete I-9's,  but they will also have to validate and register all employees via the online E-verify system.

More and more employers have been choosing adopt the E-Verify system as a means of increasing their protection from liability for fraud and clerical mistakes.

The Farkas Law Group has released a White Paper on Employment Authorization Verification, available through this link.

For more information about E-Verify and other I-9 issues you may also contact our office directly at info@farkaslawgroup.com or (212) 729-3850.
